• Overview

A hysteroscopy is a specialized medical procedure designed to provide a detailed examination of the interior of the uterus. There are various situations that warrant this procedure, including confirming a diagnosis, preparing for a dilation and curettage (D&C), or removing benign growths from the uterus.

During a hysteroscopy, a doctor employs a tool called a speculum to access the vagina and dilate the cervix. Subsequently, a hysteroscope—a thin tube equipped with a light and camera—is introduced through the cervix to visualize and capture images of the uterine interior.

For diagnostic purposes, this procedure can often be performed in a gynecologist's office with local or regional anesthesia. In more extensive surgical scenarios, it is conducted in a hospital setting, with anesthesia chosen based on the complexity of the surgery.

Post-procedure, patients may experience cramping, light bleeding or spotting, shoulder pain (if carbon dioxide gas was used), mild nausea, or lightheadedness. These side effects can be managed with supportive care. Recovery duration varies, ranging from less than an hour for office-based procedures to an overnight hospital stay in cases involving general anesthesia. Sexual activity should be avoided for about a week following non-diagnostic hysteroscopies to minimize infection risks.
